Notes of Margaret's Music-Making

"Margaret One of the major figures of the modern Scottish revival"
— Hamish Henderson

from Reviews of MARGARET BENNETT - IN THE SUNNY LONG AGO (FOOT STOMPIN' RECORDS)

…  the lithe beauty of some of Scottish trad's song repertoire, Margaret Bennett, native of the Isle of Skye is a throwback to another time. …  startlingly crystalline… Beautiful, gentle tiptoeing music.

Margaret Bennett - In the Sunny Long Ago
Originally from the Isle of Skye, Margaret Bennett comes from a long line of traditional singers, pipers and storytellers. …  This is an amazing record with fabulous songs …  a record of rare distinction.

Svein Ryder Myklebust of Atlantic Radio in Norway
“I have had the pleasure to present Margaret Bennett's album ..  it is going to be featured many times in this program… thank you very much for releasing such a rare beauty of an album.

When Hamish Henderson describes Margaret Bennett as 'One of the major figures of the modern Scottish revival' I expect to hear something special when I press the play button. Well, I pressed and she is good - but unexpectedly gentle…  It's a charmer, with some delightful songs, delightfully sung
 Roy Harris...........Taplas.......June/July 2001

Also reviewed as singer featured with Martyn Bennett in his CD Glen Lyon: A Song Cycle

Both Bennetts obviously love and respect these songs, with the result Margaret’s singing is always front and centre…  one of the most significant, interesting and powerful releases that either Bennett has been involved with in their many combined years of music making. It’s a refreshing album for anyone with an interest in Gaelic song.

Norway:
The album has been featured in the program "Røtter og Greiner" (Roots and Branches) on local Radio Atlantic, Stavanger, Norway. And it is going to have a very long life on these airwaves.

martyn bennett glen lyon (foot stompin') *****
..Profound in conception and assured in execution, Glen Lyon is a bold, brilliant and often deeply moving synthesis of modern studio capabilities and the ageless potency of ancient songs, catalysed by one of the most fertile musical minds in the business.

..amazingly creative … I will certainly be featuring some tracks on my radio show "Folkways" here on KUT-FM

I did receive the Martyn Bennett CD and I am totally dazzled by it -- by the haunting music and Margaret's voice……..

GLEN LYON: A SONG CYCLE - Martyn Bennett (Footstompin' CDFSR. 1714)

a typically bold venture, an aurally striking and eminently well-considered piece of work, and (I honestly think) a minor masterpiece

Glen Lyon…Martyn Bennett

this is an arrestingly mature piece that bears close attention.

… Martyn weaves his mother Margaret's wonderful singing into a tapestry made from the natural atmosphere of Skye.
…  more of an experience than an album. …
It's a beautiful listen … It's a beautiful collection of moods and textures, an ambient journey re-interpreting and in the process re-invigorating the Bennett family's musical tradition … and it's the record of the year so far for me.
